Introduction

This webquest explores Elie Wiesel, author of Night, by looking at his speeches. It also includes stories of survivors from other genocides, timelines of the Holocaust and some general information about Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust and Night.

You are about to begin reading Night by Elie Wiesel, which is a young boy's horrifying account of his experience in a Nazi death camp.  You are lucky because you have not ever experienced the horrors of genocide and totalitarianism.  Unfortunately, not only did the Holocaust take place, but genocides just like it continue to take place even today.  This webquest will help you to understand a little more about Elie Wiesel and his experience as well as the experiences of other survivors of death camps and genocides around the world.

In looking at the Holocaust and genocides and the suffering of the victims of these atrocities, it is important to remember what Elie Wiesel said:

"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
